Bionics – a New R&D Trend in Germany

The potential of Bionics, a new field combining biology and mechanics, has been increasingly acknowledged by German scientists and researchers in the areas of innovative materials, medicine technology, nanotechnology and computer science. The Federal Government allocated ca. ? 30 million in the past 3 years to the support of networks of competence, and to the funding of research projects. It also organised competitions of new ideas in this sector and promoted cooperation. Industrial partners are working together with research establishments to develop applications, while a number of start-ups in the sector offer specialised services.
