Einführung in die Bio-inspirierte und interaktive Materialien | Universität Bayreuth, Deutschland


Die Fortbildung fokussiert auf bioinspirierte Materialforschung. Sie richtet sich an alle interessierten Fach- und Führungskräfte aus den verschiedensten Bereichen der Industrie, Wirtschaft und Wissenschaft, die ihre Kenntnisse in bio-inspirierter Materialentwicklung erweitern bzw. vertiefen wollen. 


Die Fortbildung bietet einen Einblick in die verschiedenen industriell relevanten Faserherstellungstechnologien auf Lösungsmittelbasis wie Nass-Spinnen und Elektro-Spinnen zur Prozessierung von (Bio-)Polymeren, es werden aber auch spezielle Techniken wie das Zentrifugen-Elektrospinnen vorgestellt. Der zweite Themenschwerpunkt geht auf die Verfahren zur Herstellung von komplexen, hierarchisch strukturierten Materialien durch die Verwendung von natürlichen Strukturtemplaten (z.B. Holz) und deren Umwandlung in anorganische Funktions- und Strukturmaterialien ein. Als dritter Themenschwerpunkt wird der 3D-Druck als wichtiges additives Fertigungsverfahren in Industrie, Forschung und Biomedizin behandelt. Am Beispiel von Biotinten wird das Potential für zukünftige Anwendungen z.B. in der Biomedizin aufgezeigt.


Während der Fortbildung werden alle Aspekte der Materialentwicklung angesprochen, sowie Beispiele erfolgreicher Produktentwicklungen gezeigt. Führungen durch modernste Labore der Universität Bayreuth sowie durch die Forschungseinrichtung der Neue Materialien Bayreuth GmbH ergänzen das Programm mit praktischen Aspekten. Somit wird ein umfassender Überblick über den derzeitigen Entwicklungsstand von bio-inspirierten Materialien einschließlich ihrer Möglichkeiten und Grenzen gegeben.

ICBE 2019 │ Changchun, China


The 6th International Conference of Bionic Engineering (ICBE 2019) hosted by International Society of Bionic Engineering (ISBE) will be held at Jilin University in Changchun on September 23-26, 2019. It will be sponsored by the National Natural Science Foundation of China.


This conference aims to establish a closer relationship between scientists and engineers worldwide in the field of bionic engineering. The theme of ICBE 2019 is Higher, Holier, Healthier, which is geared towards exploring new ideas and accomplishments for the practice of bio-inspired design and manufacture, while offering innovative solutions. Attendees of this conference are invited to present papers related to the combination of biological information and mechanical engineering, materials science, agriculture engineering, rehabilitation engineering, and robotics etc. A broad range of topics and application areas will be devised to reflect the interdisciplinary nature of ICBE.

Nature-Inspired Engineering | Cetraro (Calabria), Italy


This first ECI Conference on Nature-Inspired Engineering will bring together practitioners and researchers from academia, national laboratories and industry, with interest in nature-inspired solutions for engineering. Nature-Inspired Engineering (NIE) is the application of fundamental scientific mechanisms, underpinning desirable properties observed in nature (e.g., resilience, scalability, efficiency), to inform the design of advanced technological solutions.


As illustrated by the many applications, from energy technology, catalysis and reactor engineering, to functional materials for the built environment, electronic or optical devices, biomedical and healthcare engineering, NIE has the opportunity to inform transformative solutions to tackle some of our most pressing challenges, as well as to be a pathway to innovation. Most work employing NIE is inherently cross-disciplinary, and builds on progress in fundamentals, analytical and computational tools, additive manufacturing and novel synthesis routes.


The conference will focus on the following application areas:

EUROMAT 2019 │ Stockholm, Sweden


EUROMAT is the premier international congress in the field of materials science and technology in Europe. It will be held in Stockholm (Sweden) from September 1st to 5th. 

At the EUROMAT conference our BIOKON members Marc Thielen, Georg Bold and Thomas Speck from the Plant Biomechanics Group in Freiburg, Germany, are organizing the symposium I3 “Bio-Inspired Materials”


Whilst humans have been using materials for thousands of years, Nature has had a significant head start, with over a billion years of successful research and development (i.e. evolution through natural selection). During this time Nature has created materials with a huge spectrum of properties which often outperform their industrial counterparts, from various types of self-repair in plant and animals to the incredibly tough silk of an orb weaving spider. Making them more industrially appealing, all natural materials are built hierarchically from the nanoscale-up and show a high potential for the development sustainable bio-inspired materials systems, being aqueously and efficiently processed and within a narrow range of temperatures and pressures.


This symposium will focus on what can be learnt from natural materials and how they can be used to help solve challenges in the 21st Century. Covering the most exciting and recent developments from across the fields of bio-inspiration and biomimetics, the scope of this symposium will be as broad as Nature itself. 


Invited are contributions from people working on natural and bio-inspired materials from fundamentals through to application, i.e. evolution to engineering. Specific topics may include, but are certainly not limited to: Plant-based materials and structures (cellulose, photosynthesis), animal-based materials and structures (collagen, resilin, nacre), bioinspired fabrication of materials (self-assembly, growth and spinning), biomimetic surfaces and their application (i.e. Lotus effect, photonic surfacres), and bio-inspired application of materials (i.e. smart responsive materials, materials for soft robotics, biomimetic engineering).

SEB Annual Meeting │ Seville, Spain


The Society for Experimental Biology, SEB inspires extraordinary connections in science and its Annual Meeting is a unique opportunity to share learning and experience, build contacts and foster experimentation amongst biologists from all over the world. In 2019 sessions and satellite meetings are taking place in Seville. 


At the meeting our BIOKON-colleagues Stanislav Gorb and Vladimir Katanaev are organizing the session “Functional micro- and nano-structures in biology”:

Various biological surfaces are known to be covered by elaborated micro- and nano-structures, serving a number of functions (e.g. anti-reflective, structural coloration, antifouling, pro- or anti-adhesive, etc.) and inspiring numerous industrial applications. The field of micro- and nano-structured biological surfaces and their applications in biomimetics exists for several decades. Yet recent years have witnessed a remarkable development in research in this field. Largely, this boost owes to the increasing interdisciplinary of approaches being applied to the study of structured bio-surfaces. Sciences as different as classical zoology and botany are inseminated with the advances in genetics and molecular biology; biologists collaborate more and more with nanotechnologists, materials scientists and engineers - all these contribute to the widening of the horizons of research on micro- and nano-structured biological surfaces, and to biomimetic and bioengineering applications of these surfaces in industry. The main goal of our session is to bring together scientists coming from distinct disciplines into this vibrant field of research. This session will ensure cross-inspiration among the different participants coming from different research fields and will boost innovation in research and eventual industrial developments.
