Annual Int. Conf. on Biologically Inspired Cognitive Architectures 2013 (BICA 2013)
The challenge of creating a real-life computational equivalent of the human mind calls for our joint efforts to develop biologically-inspired intelligent agents and co-robots that can be accepted and trusted by the human society as partners in various roles. To do this, we need to better understand at a computational level how natural intelligent systems develop their cognitive and learning functions.

DGM Intelligent Materials Conference
Intelligent materials with integrated functionalities are required to make devices more energy efficient, autonomous, self-responding, switchable, biocompatible, and anti-bacterial. They are also integrated into novel sensor and actuator devices with significantly increased sensitivity. Such intelligent materials typically have a complex internal structure: they can be composites from different material classes like multiferroics. They might be nanostructured or hierarchically built-up, they could be bio-inspired and possess functional elements ranging from single molecules to the macro-scale. All those materials and their design and development has to be accompanied by high-resolution analytical tools that are able to characterize the materials on all scales and, moreover, to track and reveal their function-structure relations in situ.
The symposium will bring together experts in the field of intelligent materials in order to present and discuss recent developments and detect future trends.

2nd International School and Conference on Bio-inspired Materials
18 - 21 March 2014, Kongresshotel Potsdam, Germany
The Conference covers recent advances in all areas of biological materials science and, in particular, in the field of bio-inspired materials. Scientists with diverse backgrounds will discuss new results about structure and function of natural materials and the ways in which those may influence the bio-inspired design of engineering materials and systems. The meeting will cover experimental characterization and theoretical modeling of structure-property relations, as well as concepts and strategies for the fabrication of bio-inspired materials with unusual combinations of properties or capabilities to self-assemble, self repair and/or evolve. Because material properties can be critical for the biological function of molecules, tissues and organs, the conference will also address materials science approaches which contribute to some areas of biology or medicine.
The conference will host several invited keynote lectures, oral as well as poster contributions. The Conference will start by a summer school on related topics (organized by the DFG Research Program SPP1420), intended to introduce young scientists to this emerging field.
The deadline for abstracts: 5 November 2013
The program will be developed by the Program Committee in consultation with an International Advisory Board.
Program Committee:
- Peter Fratzl, Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces, Potsdam Chairman of the Conference
- Andreas Bührig-Polaczek, RWTH Aachen
- Michaela Eder, Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces, Potsdam
- Helge Fabritius, Max Planck Institute for Iron Research, Düsseldorf
- Claudia Fleck, Technical University Berlin
- Stanislas N. Gorb, Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel
- Yael Politi, Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces, Potsdam
- Thomas Speck, Botanic Garden of the University of Freiburg
- Paul Zaslansky, Julius Wolff Institute, Charité, Berlin
- Cordt Zollfrank, TU-München, Straubing
Join us and inform youself on the latest rapidly developing bio-inspired materials science!
We are looking forward to welcoming you in Potsdam
